Chapter 10: Her Answer

I stood up.

The chair scraped on the old floor, and fourteen men turned to look at me.

"That's my voice," I said. "I said every word of it."

The uncle's mouth curved.

"I said it in my mother's living room, on Saturday morning, to my sister," I went on. "She was standing on a kitchen chair in the wedding dress I had chosen. She was crying at me because I'd taken her wedding."

"Her wedding," someone muttered.

"My wedding. I had been engaged to the man she's pregnant by for two years, and the dinner where I found out was two days old." I kept my hands flat on the table so nobody could see them shake. "I said one year because I didn't know your boss. I said it to make my sister stop. It was true when I said it."

I turned to Silvio.

He was watching me and did not move.

"It isn't true now," I said. "I didn't marry him to leave."

"Words," the uncle said softly.

"Yes. Words." I looked at him. "Here are some more. Somebody sent you that recording. I know who, because I saw him hold his phone against his chest in the kitchen doorway. His name is Shane Redford. He sat at my table for two years. He asked me to marry him in a diner."

The oldest man leaned forward.

"This is the insurance man."

"He sells insurance to your shops," I said. "Every one of you knows his face. On Friday night he sat silent while my sister announced his baby in front of my family. By Saturday he was in my mother's kitchen recording a bride's private words so he could hand them to the man who wants her husband's chair."
