Chapter 20: Lemonade

Fiora came down the long room with the tray in both hands.

Every head turned to follow her.

She walked like a girl at her own first communion, in white, with her blonde curls brushed and her eyes bright.

She had been missing all night, and she looked as if she had slept eight hours.

"Papa," she said.

She stopped beside my father's chair.

"Fiora," he said. "Where have you been?"

"Walking, and thinking. I'm so sorry for the fright I gave everyone."

She set the tray on the table in front of him.

The pitcher was glass, beaded with cold, with lemon slices floating at the top.

"Everyone's saying terrible things about Mama and me," she whispered. "And I know Nerina has said worse. But you should know that I never wanted anything but to be your daughter."

She was crying, softly, perfectly.

Half the table looked away.

"I made you a drink," she said. "The way I did on your birthday, when you were so sick. Please, Papa. Let me do one kind thing."

She lifted the pitcher and poured.

It was pale gold and it caught the light from the window.

My mother stood very still by the table with her hands folded, and I saw her lips curve.

"Fiora, dear," she said, in her softest voice. "He should drink it while it's cold."

My father's hand rose toward the glass.

"Dad," I said.
