Chapter 8: The Teapot

"Come with me," Kit whispered. "Don't wake the house."

Her fingers were cold and her grip was strong.

I kept the phone pressed against my chest, with the recorder still running.

She steered me down the back stairs and into the kitchen, and she flipped on the light over the stove.

It was the room where she'd stood in the trail camera photo.

The window over the sink looked out on the oak.

"You were listening," she said.

"The garage door is thin."

"What did you hear?"

"A lot."

She leaned against the counter with her arms crossed over her chest.

She was in the grey hoodie, and her hair was loose.

For seventeen years that face had been the one I looked for in a crowd.

"Are you going to tell me why?" I asked.

Kit laughed softly.

"You want me to confess in your kitchen at two in the morning?"

"Yes."

"With your phone in your hand." She tipped her head. "Is it recording?"

I didn't answer.

"It is," she said, almost fondly. "You always held it like that when you were nervous. Remember the thesis defense? You recorded the whole thing and listened to it back for a week."

"Kit."

"Fine. Here."

She picked up the teapot from the stove.

It was the pot from dinner, still half full, and cold.

She lifted it to her mouth and drank straight from the spout, a long swallow, and set it down.

"Chamomile," she said. "See? It's clean. Everything in this house is clean."
