Chapter 21: The Motel Room

Flynn's POV

The motel sat at a bend in Route 9, with a flickering sign and a row of doors that opened onto the lot.

The investigator was waiting for us in his car with the lights off.

"Room eleven is the driver," he said. "The man in room twelve has been in his window since four."

I could see him through the gap in the curtain, a heavy shape with a phone in his hand.

"Who is he?" Sadie asked.

"He worked Dane's security desk at the company. He's been paid out of an account that doesn't exist anymore." The investigator stepped out and straightened his raincoat. "Give me five minutes."

He walked across the lot and knocked on the door of room twelve.

It opened on the chain.

I couldn't hear what he said.

I saw the heavy man's face go slack, and then I saw the chain come off.

The investigator stood in the doorway and held up a manila folder.

"Week two hundred and fifteen," he said, loud enough to carry. "I'm filing it with the detective at nine. Your name is on page two, if you'd like to be in the report as a witness instead of a suspect."

The heavy man looked at the folder.

He took his coat off the chair, and his car keys from the dresser, and he walked past us without a word.

His taillights went down the highway.

"That was cheap," Sadie said.

"He is cheap," the investigator said. "I trained him."

Sadie and I crossed the lot to room eleven.

I held the tablet in both hands.

The door opened before I knocked.

The driver stood there in the same bandage and sling, with a gray-haired woman at his shoulder.

His wife had a coat over her nightgown, and her eyes were red.

"Mr. Sewall," he said. "I told them I won't."

"I know."
