Chapter 24: The Answer After the Clerk Leaves
The clerk sets Kael's signed reply on top of my council notice, covering my name with his. Her fingertips pin the paper in place as if I might take it back.
The reply is open. His phone rests beside it, the folded key paper beneath his hand. The clerk gathers the remaining pages, careful not to disturb the one that has turned my name into an answer to his decision.
I look at the signature first. Kael has put his name beneath the statement that he relied on an unverified bond-reading and chose to reject me. He is willing to say it before the panel. That does not put anything back where it was.
Kael turns from the clerk to face me. He does not reach for the reply.
'Will you still own your decision before the panel if I give you nothing more tonight?'
The clerk draws the pages into a neat stack. Kael keeps his attention on me, and the question stays between us without help from the papers.
'Yes. My statement is my responsibility. It is not a price for your trust.'
I watch his mouth after he speaks. He offers no softer version of the rejection, no claim that he had no choice. The answer is his, and he leaves it with me.
'I won't forgive the rejection tonight.'
Kael gives a small nod. He does not ask me to take the words back.
The clerk pauses at the door, eyes lowered to the reply. She has kept herself out of our exchange. I nod, and she sets the papers beside the council notice before leaving. The door closes behind her.
