Chapter 33: What Their Names Will Carry

The twins are Kael's. I tell him before the council can decide what they are allowed to inherit.

He stands beside the clerk's table, close enough to see Cass holding the unfinished statement flat with one hand. Eln waits for a ruling that cannot be hers to give. I draw Kael a few steps away, where the others can see us but cannot hear every word.

His eyes stay on my face. 'Tell me when.'

'On the night of the bond ceremony. In the life before this one.'

He does not ask me to repeat it or explain how I know. His right hand hangs straight at his side, fingers held still by effort. I know what it costs him to leave the question alone. I also know he has not earned the comfort of making this easier for him.

The amber shimmer forms around his head. Beneath his silence, a second voice gives me his thought: They were mine then, too.

I isolate it. The clerk's pen stops against the page. Someone shifts a chair, but I hear nothing. The sentence hangs in full color, clear and damning. I let it go. The room's sounds return, and Kael is still waiting for what I have not told him.

'You carried them through the rejection,' he says.

'Yes.'

His gaze drops to my hand, then returns to me. 'You could have told me afterward.'
