Chapter 18: The Board
The deputy took my cuffs off in the corridor outside the boardroom.
"I don't like this," he said. "For what it's worth."
"It's worth something."
Clover was waiting at the door in yesterday's scrubs, with red eyes and her phone held in both hands.
Behind her stood the captain.
He was pushing a wheelchair, and in it sat the lieutenant in a gray hospital robe, with an IV pole beside him and the wedding band on its chain outside his collar.
"He insisted," the captain said.
"I'm a witness in a court-martial," the lieutenant said, hoarse. "I'll go where I like."
The boardroom had a long oak table and seven people sitting along it.
Dr. Colquitt sat at the head in his good suit, with a pitcher of water at his elbow.
Behind them, along the wall, stood thirty nurses from my unit who had come off their shifts to watch.
"Nurse Marsden," Colquitt said, kindly. "We are here to consider the discrepancy in the pharmacy count. I am obliged to tell you that the evidence is serious."
"I'd like to call a witness."
"This board does not hear patients."
"I don't hear well, Doctor," the lieutenant said from his chair. "But I'm not a patient this morning. I'm an Army officer with a statement."
An older physician at the table cleared his throat.
"Let him speak, Alan."
Colquitt's smile stayed where it was.
"Of course."
The captain rolled the chair to the head of the room.
The lieutenant sat up as far as the pillow behind him would let him, and he looked straight down the table.
"The night before the lockdown, a doctor came to my bed," he said. "He thought I was asleep. I was on a light dose that night. He read my chart, and he said, 'I'm sorry, son. I owe some people, and they want you quiet.'"
