Chapter 19: Judd's POV

Judd's POV

I had every exit of the hospital locked inside four minutes.

The MPs took the stairs, the loading dock and the roof, and the captain held the front lobby with a radio in each hand.

Colquitt had not come out of any of them.

"He has a car," I said. "Staff garage, level two. Reserved space."

"Yes, sir."

"Nobody goes in alone."

Leah stood beside me in the corridor with her sleeves shoved up.

She had spent a night in a locked annex and a morning in front of seven people trying to ruin her, and her eyes were the brightest I had ever seen them.

"He parks in the same space every morning," she said. "He'll run for his car."

"You are staying here with the captain."

"No."

"Leah."

"I've been in a room by myself for a night, Judd." She put her hand flat on my sleeve. "I'm not staying anywhere you aren't."

I did not like it.

I also did not want her out of my sight, and she knew it.

I took her down the service elevator with two MPs and let her point out the black sedan at the end of level two.

The garage was gray and dim and almost empty.

Our steps echoed on the concrete.

Something moved behind a pillar thirty feet to the left of the car.

"Doctor," I said. "Come out."

Colquitt stepped from behind the pillar.

He had lost the good suit jacket. His shirt was soaked through at the collar and his silver hair was in his face.

In his right hand was a small revolver, very old, the kind a man keeps in a desk drawer for twenty years.
