Chapter 20: Leah's POV
Leah's POV
They ran him through the garage doors and into the ER.
I ran beside the gurney with my palms still pressed on his chest.
The blood came through my fingers anyway, warm and steady.
"Gunshot, right upper chest, no exit," I called to the trauma team as we hit the doors. "He's thirty-eight, he's had broken ribs for five weeks, and his pressure was ninety over fifty in the garage."
"Who are you?" a resident snapped.
"His nurse. Get me a chest seal and a second line."
Nobody argued.
That was the part I remember best afterward, that nobody in that room asked me for credentials.
A trauma surgeon came in with her sleeves already rolled.
She took one look at his color, listened to the right side of his chest and said, "Tension. Needle. Now."
I held the arm that was not bleeding and watched the needle go in above his rib.
A hiss of air came out, and the monitor stopped screaming.
His eyes opened.
They were gray and unfocused and found my face.
"Leah," he said.
"Don't talk."
"Are you hurt?"
"I'm fine. You idiot. I'm fine."
"Good."
His eyes closed again.
"Go," the surgeon said. "We're taking him up."
I ran with them to the doors of the operating suite, and a scrub nurse put a hand against my chest.
"You can't go in."
"I know," I said. "I know."
The doors closed.
I stood in the corridor and looked at my hands.
They were red to the wrists, and for the first time in my life I did not know what to do with them.
