Chapter 23: The Real Wedding
Leah's POV
I said yes before he finished the sentence.
Then I made him get up off the grass, because he was a man with a hole in his chest.
We were married a month later, in the back garden of the house on Pecan Lane.
Clover planned it in six days and fought with a caterer in two of them.
The camellias were in bloom, and forty folding chairs stood on the lawn.
My mother's good tablecloth was spread on a card table by the back steps.
"You will carry these," Clover said, and put a bouquet in my hands.
It was carnations in plastic wrap.
A price sticker was still on the stem.
"Clover."
"Something borrowed. I borrowed them back from the gas station." She wiped her eyes with her wrist and ruined her mascara. "Don't you dare cry yet. I've been crying since Thursday."
"You're the maid of honor."
"I'm the maid of everything."
I walked out of the kitchen door in a plain ivory dress.
The bruise on my wrist had been gone for weeks.
On the back steps I noticed that I no longer looked for it.
The same heavy judge from the courthouse stood under the pergola in his black robe, blowing his nose into a handkerchief.
"I'm sorry," he said. "It's allergy season. I have never once been in good health when you've seen me."
"It's perfect," I said, and meant it.
Judd stood at the end of the aisle in his dress uniform.
He had lost weight in the hospital, and the uniform hung a little loose on him.
His captain stood at his shoulder with the rings.
At the first row, on the aisle, stood the lieutenant.
He was on his own two feet, in uniform, with a cane he refused to lean on.
He saluted me as I came past, and I laughed out loud.
