Chapter 17: Her Own Hallway

I forwarded Taryn's text to my lawyer at midnight, and her answer came back before I had put the phone down.

Do not reply to her. Be at my office at eight-thirty Monday. Wear something you can be photographed in.

"What are we doing?" I asked her on Monday, in her elevator.

"Serving a motion," she said. "Simone Mercier was at that café table. She's a witness in her own client's case, and I'm going to ask the judge to disqualify her. I'd like her to be handed the papers in her own lobby."

"In front of people."

"At nine on a Monday. She has a full waiting room."

Charlie was in the carrier, awake and gumming the strap.

Simone's firm had the top two floors of a glass building in Denver, and the waiting room had a fountain.

Seven people sat in it with coffee and folders.

A woman my age with a toddler on her lap looked up and smiled at my baby.

I smiled back and felt something hard settle in my chest.

"Ms. Mercier, please," my lawyer told the receptionist. "She'll want to come out."

Simone came out in a charcoal suit, pulling a pen from her hair.

She stopped when she saw me.

"Mrs. Nordstrom, you shouldn't be here without notice. Your counsel knows the rules about contacting a represented party."

"I'm not contacting you," my lawyer said. "I'm serving you."

She held out a thick envelope, and Simone did not take it.

"What is it?"

"A motion to disqualify you as counsel, because you are a fact witness. A notice of deposition. And the notice that the judge's referral to Attorney Regulation Counsel has been docketed."
