Chapter 22: The Ruling

Libby's POV

The judge came back at one and didn't sit for a full minute.

She stood behind the bench with a thin stack of paper, and she looked at Carter.

"I have read every exhibit," she said. "I have also watched two videos, the café and the hotel corridor, three times each, which I do not often have to do."

Carter's hands lay flat on the table.

"This court finds that Mrs. Nordstrom is a fit and loving mother. The petition alleging otherwise was supported by a sworn declaration from a person who was paid to write it. That is not a close question."

I did not feel my hands.

My lawyer's fingers closed around my wrist under the table.

"Sole legal and physical custody of Charlie Nordstrom is awarded to the mother. Mr. Nordstrom may have supervised visits, two hours, twice a month, at a county facility, until this court sees a reason to change it."

Carter made a small sound.

"The trust will pay its monthly sum to Mrs. Nordstrom as custodial guardian, as the settlor intended. Mr. Nordstrom is barred from acting in any capacity concerning it. His request to be appointed trustee is denied, and I am making a note to the trustee that she is not to take his calls."

A rustle went through the gallery.

"Mr. Nordstrom, you filed a sworn statement that your wife was unfit, and you built it from a paid informant's notes. I am referring the matter to the district attorney."

"Your Honor," Carter said, "I only ever wanted what was best."

"Mr. Nordstrom, sit down."

He had not been standing.

He looked down at himself, and he sat.
