Chapter 23: The Bonding Moon

"Yes," Elias said.

He said it quietly, but the terrace heard it.

His hand turned in mine and held on so hard that it hurt, and I did not want it to stop.

"Yes. Mara. Yes."

Somebody in the patrol gave a cracked whoop, and then all forty of them were shouting.

The King lifted his hand, and the noise fell away.

"There is a way this is done," he said. "My father did it badly. Do it as you wish."

I had been bitten once before.

I remembered the dark hall and the bad wine, the old King swaying in his chair, and a stranger's mouth hard on my shoulder.

Nobody had asked me anything.

I turned to Elias, and I pulled my collar aside on the right shoulder, the one the old mark had not touched.

"Ask me," I said.

He swallowed, his eyes bright in the moonlight.

"Mara Hallowell, will you take me as your mate?"

"Yes."

"Say my name with it," he said, his voice low and rough.

"Yes, Elias." I smiled, and it shook. "Now you."

He lowered his collar and bared his own shoulder, the strong curve of it above the bandage.

"Bite me first," he said. "Then I'll bite you."

I leaned in.

His skin was warm and tasted of pine and smoke.

I closed my teeth on him, gently at first, then deeper, and I felt the moment the bond took.

A door opened inside me that I had never known was there.

I felt his heart.

I felt it beating, and the sweet fierce ache of it, and under that a deep, quiet, six-year-old patience, and a happiness so wide it nearly knocked me down.

I gasped against his skin.

"Elias."

"I feel you," he said hoarsely. "Mara, I feel all of you."

Then he bent his head to my shoulder and kissed it first, long and slow.

His teeth sank in, slow and sure, and there was no pain at all.

There was only warmth, spreading outward from the place where his mouth was, through my chest and down my arms, until I was shaking with it.
