Chapter 17: Peach Pie
"Item seven," Cooper announced on Sunday afternoon. "Eat a whole peach pie."
"No," said Jonas and Rudy, at the same time.
They stood at either end of the farmhouse kitchen with their arms crossed, and for a second Cooper thought they might actually agree about something.
"Rule four," he said.
"You can't have a whole pie. It's potassium," Rudy said.
"It's fruit and sugar," Jonas said. "And your numbers..."
"My numbers are all bad. That's why I want the pie."
On the counter between them sat a lattice-topped peach pie, still warm, with steam curling from the cuts in the crust.
Rudy had brought it that morning in a towel.
"My grandmother's recipe," he said. "Last of the freezer peaches. She'd come back from the dead to hit me with a spoon if I let this go to waste."
"Then let him have a slice," Jonas said.
"Half."
"A slice and a half."
