Chapter 19: Two Beds
The pre-op bay at Emory had two beds, a curtain that did not quite close, and a view of the helicopter pad.
Cooper lay in the left bed in a paper-thin gown with an IV in each arm and a pulse oximeter on his finger.
Jonas lay in the right bed, six feet away, in a matching gown, looking enormous and out of place on the narrow mattress.
"You've got your feet hanging off," Cooper said.
"I noticed."
"You look like a kid on a field trip," Cooper said.
"You look like a kid on a field trip who ate the paste."
"I feel great," Cooper said.
"You have a fever."
"A low one. It's gone down." Cooper wiggled his fingers at him. "Nobody tells you how boring this part is. You'd think someone would play music."
A nurse came by with a clipboard and checked both of their bracelets, then both of their IVs.
She looked from one bed to the other, at the two men with their heads turned toward each other.
Her mouth quirked.
"The anesthesiologist will be in at six-fifty," she said. "Mr. Brannen, you go first. Mr. Teasley, you follow in about forty minutes, once we have the kidney out and checked."
