Chapter 21: Light Duty
"No lifting," Cooper said. "Doctor's orders. Doctor's orders and my orders."
"I'm lifting a glass of water."
"You're lifting it with the wrong arm," Cooper said.
"I only have two."
"Then use the one that doesn't pull."
Jonas set the glass on the nightstand with the dignity of a man who has lost an argument in his own house.
It was three weeks to the day since the surgery.
The farmhouse smelled of woodsmoke and chicken soup, and the pecan rows outside the bedroom window had gone bare and silver.
For the first time since October, Cooper felt like himself.
More than himself.
He felt strong.
His new kidney was doing its work in his side, quiet and ordinary.
The color had come back into his face, and he had put on eight pounds of Jonas's cooking that he fully intended to keep.
Jonas, by contrast, was a terrible patient.
He had been told not to drive and had driven twice.
He had been told not to lift more than ten pounds and had carried in a Christmas tree.
Cooper had finally taken his truck keys and hidden them in the flour canister.
"You're a tyrant," Jonas said.
