Chapter 16: The Boardroom
Earl stood up in the back row.
It took him a while. He let it take a while.
"Which doctor?" he said.
Corrie blinked. "Grandpa, it's in the letter."
"I know it's in the letter. I'm asking the room." He pointed his cane down the aisle at the envelope. "Is it the one who plays golf with my eldest son on Thursdays, or the one who plays on Saturdays?"
Somebody in the benches snorted.
"I can tell you the tonnage of every boat I own," Earl said. "I can tell you what diesel cost in 1974, and which one of you still owes me for a dock in 1988. I'm eighty. I'm not a houseplant."
"Nobody said you were a houseplant," Blaine said, without turning around.
"Your sister just did. In front of the council. With a letter."
Reuben brought the gavel down once, not hard.
"The letter is received," he said. "It doesn't change item six tonight."
"It changes Friday," Corrie said sweetly.
She was right. It did.
Earl didn't go back up the bluff that night.
He came down the City Hall steps beside us and stopped at the gray pickup.
