Chapter 13: Paper Only

Ingrid arrived four days later, alone, with one carry-on bag and a folder.

The guards checked her bag twice.

I met her at the glass wall of the visitor lobby, and the director stood by the security desk with his arms folded.

She looked thinner.

Her glasses were taped at one hinge.

"You said paper only," she said. "I brought paper only."

She slid my camera bag across the counter first.

"I never opened it."

"Thank you."

"I wanted to give it back the same day I took it. I kept telling myself I'd do it tomorrow."

I put the bag on a chair and didn't unzip it.

Ingrid opened the folder on the counter between us.

"This is the note Felix gave Daphne in April. It says he has a heart murmur and a procedure scheduled. Look at the letterhead."

I looked.

It was a clinic name and a doctor's name, and a phone number at the bottom.

"I called that number from a pay phone, so he wouldn't see it on anyone's bill," Ingrid said. "It rang at a pharmacy. The pharmacist said she's never heard of the doctor."

"Maybe the number is old."

"I went to the address. It's a vacant storefront with paper over the windows."

She turned a second sheet around.

"This is North University's entrance health form. Felix left it on Daphne's kitchen table in May. It's signed by a doctor in North City, and it says no cardiac history, cleared for all activity."

I read the line twice.

"He gave one story to his school and another to us," I said.
