Chapter 20: Into the Microphone

Three hundred heads turned to the back of the room.

Ty was sitting very still at the table by the kitchen doors.

The mayor was on one side of him.

His mama was on the other.

I knew that face.

It was the face he made when the tub dripped or the porch light went out, and he waited for somebody else to handle it.

Then his mama put her hand flat on his back.

She didn't push.

She just left it there.

Ty stood up.

He walked down the middle of the ballroom, past the silk and the summer suits, past the cameras.

Past the bread truck man and his granddaughter.

Past the old man next door, in a short-sleeved dress shirt and his railroad cap, who didn't look up at him.

He stopped in front of me.

He held out his hand for the microphone.

Then I gave it to him.

He turned around to face the room.

His hand was shaking. The microphone picked it up, a little rattle in every speaker.

"My name's Ty Waddell," he said. "I own Waddell Heating & Air. My daddy started it."

He swallowed.

"I signed those sheets. All thirty-one. I signed that every one of these folks had a unit in."

Lacy was gripping the podium behind him.

"Ty," she said, off the microphone. "Ty, honey, don't."

He didn't turn around.

"I knew where the units went. I knew in May. I knew the whole time."

The room didn't make a sound.

"I told her it was no..."

He stopped.

I watched him hear it.

The words he'd said to me a thousand times, coming up his own throat in front of three hundred people.

He didn't say them.

He looked down at the old man next door.

"Sir," he said. "I drove past your sign every day for three months. I'm sorry."

The old man looked up at him then.

He didn't say it was all right. He nodded once, and looked away.
