Chapter 21: Hold Out Your Wrists
Brecken stood up.
He held out his wrists.
He did it quickly and without looking at anyone.
The inspector fastened the cuffs.
A camera flash went off, and then fifty more.
Every one of them was pointed at the man in the navy tuxedo, the Lowry heir with half the lakefront in his name.
I did not look away.
"Pane Lowry will go with my officers," the inspector said. "But first, for the record, I will tell the room what Prague has learned this evening."
He opened his notebook.
"The woman in the clinic fire has a name tonight. Her sister in Illinois identified her from her fingerprints. She was paid to die, or paid to be there, and she did not know which."
He turned a page.
"Eight days before the fire, a payment of eighty thousand dollars left a shell company in Delaware. That company was opened with the private card of Miss Quarles."
A murmur rose from the floor.
"One man was arrested this afternoon at a tram depot after he seized a pregnant woman off the street," the inspector said. "The driver gave himself up at six. Both have told us they were paid by the same card to follow her, and to wait for a phone call from Miss Quarles."
"Lies," Bethany said.
Her voice had gone thin.
"They're paid liars. Everyone is lying about me."
"Miss Quarles, there is a lab report, a surgeon, a pharmacy log, a bank record and your own words," the inspector said. "Who is lying?"
She looked from face to face in the hall.
Nobody looked back.
