Chapter 13: The Door
I pulled the door shut on my mother's face.
The latch dropped with a clack.
I put my back against the planks and held them there with my whole weight.
The Land Rover came round the bend and stopped behind the Panda, engine running, headlights full on me.
Alasdair climbed down from the passenger side in his tweed cap.
"You've beaten us, hen!" He looked up at the chimney. "And the stove's going already. Good lass."
"It's smoking back," I said.
"What is?"
"The stove. There's a jackdaw nest in the flue. The place is black with it. I couldn't breathe in there."
He frowned and came up the path.
"Jackdaws in December? Let me have a look."
He reached past me for the latch.
I didn't move.
"Don't," I said. "Please. Not tonight."
His big hand stopped an inch from my shoulder.
"Ailsa? You've gone white."
"I'm cold. I want to go back up to the house. I'll tell you there."
"You said you'd something to tell me down here. Finlay said it had to be here."
