Chapter 7: Sixty Thousand

I took the phone out of Gran's hand and scrolled.

I shouldn't have.

"Imagine screaming at a widow two days after she gives birth."

"Her husband DIED for this country and this woman throws a ring at her baby?"

"I'd leave her too, honestly."

"Somebody find out where she lives."

That one had four hundred likes.

Tilly squirmed in the carrier against my chest.

I gave the phone back to Gran and put both hands on my daughter's back.

"Okay," I said. "Okay."

The diner phone rang.

Gran picked it up.

"Silver Spur." She listened. Her eyebrows went up. "No, she doesn't have a comment. Yes, I'm sure. No, you can't come up here and ask her. This is a restaurant. You can come up here and order the meatloaf."

She hung up.

"Who was that?"

"A girl from a TV station in Colorado Springs." Gran adjusted her glasses. "Very polite. I hope she orders the meatloaf."

It rang again.

Gran unplugged it from the wall.

At the counter, the old man who has eaten two eggs over easy at seven fifteen every day since I was born cleared his throat.

"For what it's worth, Mallory," he said, "my wife watched that thing six times. She says she'd have thrown more than a ring."

The woman next to him nodded.

"Where's the part where he lied to you for nine months?" she said. "They cut that part."

I had to go into the kitchen for a minute.

By ten, the team had heard.

The kid came in with his phone already out and his face red.

"I'm going to post the truth," he said. "I'll tell everybody. I'll make a video."

"No."

"Mallory, they're saying you attacked her!"

"I know what they're saying." I sat down in the back booth. "If you fight them in the comments, they win. That's their room. They own it."

"So what do we do?"

I didn't know.

The schoolteacher sat down across from me and folded her hands.
