On Christmas Eve the Orsini table held thirteen desserts and one man who should not have been there.
The long board in the front room was laid in white.
Seven lean dishes stood down the middle, snails and salt cod and a dish of cardoons, with three loaves and three candles.
Marie-Ange sat at the head's right hand, in black, with her plaster wrist on the cloth.
She had refused the hospital's wheelchair at the door and walked in on Antone's arm.
My uncle arrived at eight, in his good coat, with a bottle in each hand.
"Antone," Sauveur said, and embraced him before he could step back. "Family. At last."
Antone stood stiff in the embrace.
"Sit," Marie-Ange said, from her chair. "At my right. It is the place of honor."
My uncle beamed at her, and sat.
Cecilia took the seat across from him, in a red dress, and raised her glass to the room.
