Chapter 14: The Study
Antone's POV
At four in the morning on the twenty-sixth I opened my father's desk, and I did it with the key my aunt had left on the blotter.
I had not slept since the table.
The study smelled of cold pipe smoke and old paper, and nothing in it had been moved in eleven years.
In the bottom drawer lay a card from a florist in the Panier, printed, with a line of my father's handwriting under it.
White lilies. Saint-Pierre cemetery, section twelve, A. Santoni.
Fourteenth of October. First of November. Every Saturday after, until Advent.
Every year, it said, until I say stop.
The card was gray at the folds from being opened.
Eleven years of lilies, and my father had never once said the name Santoni in my hearing.
I sat down in his chair.
I understood then who had put the flowers on Ange Santoni's grave on the morning of my wedding.
The safe stood behind the desk, and I opened it.
The tribunal's report lay at the bottom in a gray folder, tied with string.
