Chapter 16: Odd's Price
My father was on his knees in the mud outside the south gate.
His good coat was ruined and his hands were clasped.
He was sober.
I had not seen Odd Lorne sober in daylight since I was eleven, and it made him look like a stranger.
"Thyra, love."
"Stand up."
"I can't.
"I'll tell you everything, love, only don't send me away before I say it."
"You'll say it in the hall," I said.
"Where the lords can hear."
He flinched.
Then he nodded.
By noon the great hall of Brenmoor was full of eleven border lords, the Beta and the Alpha's sister.
A hundred of the household lined the back wall.
Ivar stood at the foot of the high table with his hands folded.
Ketil sat in the high seat without moving.
I stood in the open floor with my father at my side and my mother's iron lid in my arms.
Ivar began, in his mild voice.
He thanked the lords for coming.
He spoke of his love for the House of Rask and his grief at the sad business of the signature.
