Chapter 17: Ketil Pays
The lords gathered at first light, grey-faced and cold from the road.
Ketil did not take the high seat.
He walked past it to the middle of the stone floor.
Every lord could see him, and so could the whole household crowded along the walls.
He stopped.
Then he went down on his knees.
The sound of it, bone on stone, went through the hall.
A lord near me muttered, "Gods."
Sigrun stood at the foot of the dais with a flat iron box in her hands.
She set it on the floor in front of him and stepped back, white to the lips.
He lifted the lid.
Inside lay a folded writ, tied with black cord, sealed in red wax with the wolf's head of the House of Rask.
"This is my father's writ of judgement," said Ketil.
"It sent a cook to the beam on the strength of a paper I signed without reading."
