Chapter 22: The Pot Lid
I did not wait for the door to burn through.
"Copper!" I shouted.
Four cooks tipped the big copper of rendered grease onto the stone, right at the foot of the burning door.
I put my shoulder to the bolt and shot it back.
The door flew open.
The first southern wolf through it came in at a run, hit the grease, and went across the floor on his back.
The second fell on top of him.
"Now!" screamed Hetta, and the kitchen came down on them with ladles, cleavers and pans.
It was not elegant.
I clubbed a man with a bread paddle.
The head scullion put her cleaver through the strap of a southern wolf's sword belt and sat on him.
Then a roar went up behind us, from the hall side.
Ketil came through the serving door with his leg bound and a lord's armed grooms at his back.
The yard outside lit up with torches.
The guards from the guest wing had come at last.
Squeezed between the kitchen and the lords' men, the southern wolves broke.
They ran for the postern, slipping in the grease, throwing their swords down in the dark.
