Chapter 27: Bag by Bag
The uncle didn't look at Matvei.
He sat down in the second row beside Parker and folded his starred hands on his cane.
Two foremen in work jackets sat down behind him. I'd seen them on Matvei's berth in November.
Matvei sat down in the front row, on my right, with his hands loose on his knees.
The Port Authority board sat at a long table on a low stage. Seven of them, with name cards and water glasses.
The chairman, a heavy man with a gray beard, read the agenda.
"The operating license of Atwater Marine. Comments from the owners."
Parker was on his feet before the chairman finished.
He walked to the microphone in the aisle.
"Thank you, Mr. Chairman. My family has run that terminal for a hundred years."
"Two years ago a good man fell from crane two. We all grieved. My wife and I sent his widow a card."
In the front row, the widow's hands closed on her purse.
"What we didn't know then," Parker said, "was that he'd discovered theft on our berth. Containers stripped. Watches, cognac, handbags. Stolen by Zorin crews."
