Zoya held the envelope over the rail by one corner and flicked the lighter.
The flame took my brother's handwriting first.
She let it burn almost to her fingers, then let go.
It went down past four floors of brick in little black pieces, and the channel took them.
"What did it say?" Matvei asked.
"I don't know," I said. "I'll never know. That's the point."
Zoya handed me a bagel.
That was a year ago.
Clean Slate has three white vans now.
The sisters run the second one. My landlord's grandson runs the third, and he only blushes on Mondays.
My housekeeper retired in March. She still comes in on Fridays to tell everyone they're doing it wrong.
We do the housing authority, the funeral homes, every dock in the harbor, and Zoya's bathroom when a client faints.
