Chapter 13: No
I came down to the long kitchen at six, and the Chief's chair was waiting for me.
Someone had carried it from the head of the table to the middle of the flags and set it facing the door.
Coll stood beside it in yesterday's shirt, with his torn knuckles wrapped in a dishtowel.
He had not slept.
The sixty-one stood along the wall with their porridge going cold.
At the far end Dugald knelt on the flagstones with a scrubbing brush and a bucket.
The red wool on his wrist was dark with wet, and he did not lift his head.
"The elders came at dawn," Coll said. "They want you named heir of the Grey House before the week is out."
"Do they?"
"The chair is yours the moment you sit in it."
Every face in the room turned to the chair.
Peigi set her ladle down on the range.
"No," I said.
Nobody moved.
"No to the chair, and no to the name," I said. "And no to you."
