Chapter 16: The Basin
Ishbel's POV
"No," I said.
His face closed, and I laid my palm flat on his chest before he could shut himself away.
"Not in the kitchen," I said. "Whatever it is, ask me in the scullery. There's a copper in there, and you stink of quarry."
He stared at me.
Then he laughed, short and cracked, with a hand pressed to his ribs.
"Aye," he said. "Aye, all right."
The scullery behind the long kitchen was a stone room with a deep sink and a copper in the corner.
A zinc bath hung on a hook by the door.
I lit the fire under the copper and hauled the bath down myself.
He tried to help, and I pointed at the stool, and he sat.
We filled the bath with a bucket chain, him lifting what his ribs allowed, me doing the rest.
Steam rose until the windows ran.
It was nearly six, and the glen outside was still black.
"Now," I said. "What did you want to ask me?"
He stood and took the towel off his shoulder.
"I want to wash you," Coll said. "The way you washed me."
He turned the towel in his hands.
"I don't know how to do anything for you but sign things, and I'll not sign another one."
"That's all?" I asked.
"That's all."
I looked at him, bruised black from hip to shoulder, standing barefoot on wet stone, asking.
"Get in," I said.
He eased himself into the zinc bath, grunting, with his knees up and his bandaged side held away from the rim.
It was a tight fit for a man of his size.
I took off my nightgown and dropped it on the flags.
I stepped over the rim and lowered myself between his knees, with my back against his chest.
