Chapter 18: Bram's Bet
"Twenty dollars says he brings cash," Bram said.
"Dean has no cash," said Alister.
"He has a hundred and fifty thousand reasons to find some."
"Five hundred."
"You're on," Bram said, and shook his hand across the kitchen table before anyone could stop them.
The nurse watched them with her phone in her lap.
"Is this normal?" she asked me.
"It's the only way they know how to love people," I said.
She took Dean's call at the sink, with the whole family silent behind her.
She said "Yes" and "Tomorrow" and "I'll come alone," in a flat, tired voice.
When she hung up, she was shaking.
"He's picking the place," she said. "A hotel bar. The Harborline."
Linus put his hand over his eyes.
"That's my hotel," he said. "He doesn't even know it's my hotel."
"He knows nothing," Bram said, delighted. "He's the most uninformed man in Boston."
On Saturday afternoon, the Harborline bar was dim and nearly empty, and the Foundation dinner was four hours away.
Bram stood behind the counter in a black vest, polishing a glass with the concentration of a surgeon.
Nobody had asked him to be the bartender.
