Chapter 23: Eleanor's Table
We reached the house near the lake in nine minutes, and Denton drove the last six blocks himself.
The housekeeper met us at the door in a nightgown and a coat, shaking.
Eleanor lay on the dining room carpet beside her overturned chair, with a pillow under her head.
Her silver bob was out of place, and her cane lay across the room.
One side of her mouth had slipped.
"Don't move her," I said, and went down on my knees.
My training took over my hands before my mind caught up.
"Eleanor. Can you hear me? It's Lizzie. Squeeze my fingers."
Her left hand squeezed mine, weakly.
Her right hand lay open on the rug.
"Smile for me," I said.
Half her face lifted.
"Say, 'the sky is blue in Chicago.'"
She said something that was not words.
Her eyes found mine, furious, and frightened.
"It's a stroke," I said, and I heard how steady my voice was. "When did you last see her walking?"
"Quarter past one," the housekeeper said. "She took her tea and said good night."
"It's twenty to three. Denton, call nine-one-one. Say stroke, say last known well at one-fifteen, right side weak."
"Tell them to bring her to Northwestern and call ahead."
