On the Saturday after Eleanor came home, the front door of the house on Astor Street stood wide open.
The brass fox on the knocker had been polished, and a ribbon of white flowers ran up the black iron rail.
The probate judge had signed the deed over to me on Wednesday, with my father's name still on the line above mine.
I stood in the hall in a plain ivory dress and listened to the house breathe.
It no longer smelled of lilies.
"Go to the study," Denton said behind me. "I'll find you at one."
"What's in the study?"
"You asked me for one thing, the morning after we married."
I went down the hall alone.
The study door was open, and the leather chair stood by the window again, with its dent in the seat.
Margot had sold it in the spring.
On the desk, on a small wooden stand, lay a man's steel watch with a cracked leather band.
I picked it up, and my hands knew the weight of it before I understood.
