Chapter 23: Equal Terms
We took the call from the boardroom on the forty-first floor, because I wanted my uncle's chair in the background.
It was empty.
I sat in it for the first time in my life, with Joaquin standing behind me and the screen filling the long wall.
Nine faces looked out of it from Singapore, and none of them were friendly.
The woman in the silver gown sat at the center in a plain black suit.
"Chairman," said an older man at the end of the table. "We have read the wire."
"We built this company on the principle that Meridian buys what it names, openly, and does not marry what it buys."
"Explain."
Joaquin opened his mouth, and I put my hand on his wrist.
"May I?" I said.
Nine faces turned.
"I am Daphne Heyward, chief executive of Heyward Freight, and the woman in that article."
"The draft is real, and so is the rescission."
"His London attorney has the timestamp, and it is in your inbox."
"You will see it came days before the wire."
The older man looked at his tablet and said nothing.
"Whoever sold you that story," I said, "kept the draft and threw away the rescission, because the second page does not sell papers."
