Chapter 15: The Truth
I told myself I was going for my tools.
Half my good bits were still in the club's basement, in a bucket beside the 1946 panel.
I parked on Brown Avenue at 8:24 and walked in through the brass door with my work boots still on.
The bartender looked up and didn't say a word. He just tipped his head at the dining room.
Every table was full.
People were standing along the back wall, holding drinks they'd stopped drinking.
Nobody had left.
I stayed in the doorway, half behind a copper coat rack, where nobody had to see me.
Duane was at the end of the bar in a lavender golf shirt, one elbow on the brass rail.
He saw me. He lifted his glass an inch.
I didn't lift anything back.
At 8:30 Abram stepped up onto the stage.
He didn't tap a glass. He didn't clear his throat.
He just stood there until the room went quiet on its own.
"Last night," he said, "my wife asked me a question in this room. And I answered it."
