Chapter 16: Conduit
"I know," Abram said.
That was all.
He didn't ask what would. He didn't reach for me.
He stepped aside so I could get to the door.
I walked out and left my card on the edge of the stage where he'd put it.
Saturday I had a side job in Mesa.
A widow on a street I used to ride my bike down had called me after the lift video. Her 1962 panel buzzed when the dryer ran, and three men had told her it was fine.
I pulled up at five in the morning, before the heat.
Breck's old pickup was already at the curb.
Abram was sitting on the tailgate with two coffees, in jeans and a gray T-shirt I'd never seen him wear.
"How did you know where I'd be?"
"Rand asked the widow. She has a lot of opinions about you."
"I didn't hire you."
"You didn't." He held out a coffee. "I'll carry things. I won't talk."
I took the coffee.
He carried ten-foot sticks of conduit from my car to the side yard for four hours.
He didn't talk once.
He handed me the wrong pliers twice and the right ones every time after that.
