I didn't say a word in the car.
Breck drove, and I sat in the back with the brass key tag in my fist and watched Scottsdale go by.
Abram wasn't in the car.
He'd said he needed an hour to drive alone, and he'd said it to us first.
He walked into the kitchen at nine that night and found the three of us waiting at the island.
Rand had a legal pad. Breck had his arms folded.
I had the card.
"Where were you Monday?" I said.
Abram set his keys down.
He looked at my face, and then at Breck's, and I watched him understand that the investigator had called more than one of us.
"Prescott," he said.
"Not Chandler."
"No."
"Rule seven."
"I know."
"You said 'supplier.' You looked at me on the tailgate and you said 'supplier.'"
My voice was shaking, and I let it.
"It was so easy for you."
"It was," he said. "I'm not going to tell you it wasn't."
Rand turned the pad around.
"I pulled it up on the state portal in the car," he said. "It's filed."
"Voluntary acknowledgment of paternity. Signed in Prescott, notarized in the Crandall family's law office."
