Chapter 38: The Silver Bob
On Saturday morning Breck called a members' brunch, and the Copper Room dining room was full by nine.
He stood on a chair by the bar in a sport coat and told them everything he was allowed to.
There was a petition. It was public. His friend's mother was behind it.
He didn't say Hazel's name once, and he didn't say whose she was.
Nobody asked.
I stood at the back with a coffee and watched Rand, across the room, bend to listen to a man twice his age.
He pushed his glasses up with one knuckle while he did it.
I thought about that knuckle at an inconvenient moment and made myself stop.
The cook slid a plate of pancakes onto the bar in front of me and walked away without a word.
The woman with the silver bob had taken the last table in the corner.
She wasn't wearing the mask.
She hadn't worn it on a Saturday morning in fourteen years, she told me later, and she wasn't about to start.
