Rand's records request came back on Thursday afternoon, a week sooner than the county had promised.
"They want this over," he said. "Somebody in that office is nervous."
He spread the pages across the kitchen island.
It was the intake sheet for the anonymous report, the one that started the case.
Most of it had been blacked out with a thick marker, line after line.
"Look at what they forgot to hide," Rand said.
I looked.
Date of call, October ninth, 4:12 p.m.
Caller, anonymous.
Callback number, redacted, except for the first three digits, which somebody had missed.
"Nine two eight," I said.
"That's northern Arizona. Prescott, Flagstaff, Sedona." He tapped it. "The house is in Paradise Valley. Whoever called about it lives two hours north."
"Or called from there."
"On a prepaid phone, according to the carrier field." He tapped the next box. "No subscriber. Bought with cash and thrown away."
