Chapter 15: The Cheque
Valeria opened the cream envelope in the car, with Rodrigo watching her hands.
Inside was a two-page statement on lawyer's paper and a bank cheque folded once.
The statement said that Valeria Ocampo had agreed to the heir arrangement of her own free will.
It said she had known about Brenda's pregnancy from the start.
It said she asked to be left in peace.
There was a line at the bottom for her signature.
Rodrigo read it over her shoulder and went white.
"She forged the letter. Now she wants you to sign the same lie."
"Look at the cheque."
The sum was five million pesos.
At the top, in careful slanted handwriting, someone had written a note.
*Lunch at one, the tearoom on Calle Hidalgo. Come alone, poor dear.*
Rodrigo's jaw locked.
"You are not going."
"I am going."
"Valeria, she'll..."
"She'll talk. She loves to talk. That's the only thing she has ever loved more than the trust."
She started the voice recorder on her phone and laid it in her bag.
Rodrigo looked at the bag, and then at her.
"Four hundred guests are coming to her party in eight weeks," Valeria said. "I need her to say everything she thinks in a room where nobody else can hear it."
"Then I'll wait outside."
"You'll wait at Fabiola's with the groceries."
"It's Thursday."
"Then carry them early."
Aurora sat at the corner table in the tearoom, in pearls and a pale blue jacket.
She rose when Valeria came in and kissed the air beside her cheek.
"Poor dear. You look tired. Sit."
