Chapter 15: Rescue, With Cameras

Rhys was on his feet before the horn finished.

He found his torn shirt, looked at it, and put on Abel's spare oilskin instead.

"She wasn't due until first light," he said. "She's early because the men never reported back."

"She knows something's wrong."

"She knows something's late. That's different." He looked at me. "She's brought cameras, so she thinks she's about to get the widower's reunion. Let her say what she came to say, on tape."

I pulled my shorts on with hands that still shook.

"Your phone is dead," I said.

"The pilot's tablet isn't."

I stared at him.

"It has a voice recorder in it, and it works with the case cracked. I tested it while you were pulling on your shorts." He held out his hand. "If Veda searches anyone, it'll be you. She won't search me."

I unzipped the baby bag and gave him the tablet.

He thumbed the red dot, then slid the whole case flat inside his belt, under the oilskin.

"Get Junie," he said. "Come down the hill when you hear me say your name. Not before."

"And if she says something that isn't enough?"

"Then we keep smiling until she does."

I ran to the cellar.

Abel was already at the top of the steps with Junie awake and curious in the crook of his arm.

"I heard," he said. "The lads in the shed are gagged and the door's wedged. If she wants to look in my shed, she can do it over my body."

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me." He handed me the baby. "Just don't let her hold her."

I put on the carrier with Junie against my chest and walked into the trees above the beach.

A white launch had come in through the gap in the reef, carrying a dozen people.

There were two cameras, a boom microphone, and a woman in a navy blazer already holding a notebook.

Out past the reef a smaller boat rode with a news logo on its bow and a drone lifting off its roof.
