Chapter 15: The Table

Before Benedict could press the code a third time, the iron gate began to swing open.

An old woman stood in the drive with a cane in one hand and a remote in the other.

It was Preston's grandmother, in a gray wool coat, her white hair pinned up.

She waited until the Lincoln rolled up beside her, and she looked in through the window at her son.

"My grandson changed the code at six this morning," she said. "I changed it back at seven."

"Mother."

"Park on the grass, Benedict. Everybody's here."

Skye leaned forward between the seats.

"I like her," she whispered.

The house at Saugatuck was long and white, with a deep porch and a lawn that rolled down to a gray-blue lake.

A single table had been set across the lawn under the oaks, forty places on white linen, and every chair was full.

Aunts in cardigans, uncles in blazers, and the two men from the club who owned half a block of the Loop.

They all stopped talking when I got out of the car.

Benedict came around and offered me his arm.

I took it, because I wanted to.

Preston sat halfway down the long side of the table in a blue sweater.

He had his legs stretched out.

Kendall sat beside him in a cream dress, with her hair brushed smooth and a smile that had been put on her.

He had brought her.
