At nine o'clock on Monday night, I knocked on the door of Benedict's study and waited for him to say come in.
He was behind the desk in a charcoal suit and a white shirt, with no tie.
The lamp was lit, and the blue photograph album lay shut under his hand.
He stood when I came in.
I wore a plain black dress with a high neck, and flat shoes.
I carried two things.
The page was in my left hand.
In my right was a small box from the jeweler on Armitage, bought on my lunch hour with my own money.
"Close the door," he said.
"No," I said. "You close it."
He smiled, and shut it.
I crossed the carpet and stood in front of the desk.
"I told Gran this morning," I said.
"She says Preston left for his mother's in Naples on Saturday."
"And Kendall took a job in another city."
"So Gran sits at the lake house table with an empty chair on each side and her cane across her lap."
"She told me, too."
"She said she's never had so much room to stretch her legs."
He laughed, quietly.
I unfolded the page.
"Eight," I said.
"I've been wondering all day."
"Rule eight is mine, so I'll read it myself."
I took a breath.
"I came into your life by accident, and I'm staying on purpose."
He said nothing.
"I thought I could give you my body without telling you what I wanted. I was wrong."
"Hallie."
"I want this."
