Chapter 19: Four
Maud had delivered goats, three foals and a Beta's son.
She rolled up her sleeves and said four was only two sets of twins, and she'd done twins.
"Breathe," she said. "In through your nose. Out through your mouth. Stop swearing at Joanna."
"Joanna's the one who said I could have a baby without screaming!"
"I said you could try," Joanna said from the foot of the bed. She had on a surgical mask and a hold-issue apron. "You're doing great. Push when you want to."
I wanted to.
I wanted to, very much, all at once.
Rhys sat behind me on the bed with his arms around my chest, holding me up.
He had been saying "I'm here" for two hours in a voice that cracked every other word.
"You're useless," I told him.
"I know."
"Give me your hand."
He did.
The next pain took me over, and I closed my fingers on his.
Frost shot up his forearm.
"Ah," Rhys said, quite calmly. "That's my hand."
"You told me to take what I needed!"
"I did. Take it."
Maud laughed so hard she had to put a towel to her mouth.
The first one came with a bellow.
A boy, red and furious, with a thatch of black hair, and he filled the room with noise.
"There he is," Maud said. She laid him on my chest.
"That's the loud one," she said. "Look at him."
I looked at him.
I did not have any words.
The second was a girl.
She came out silent and grey-eyed, with a tuft of white hair, and she looked up at the torchlight without blinking.
