Chapter 10: Jealous
"I don't know how to do this," Ashton said, holding the spatula like a weapon.
"Do what?"
"Breakfast. With someone who stayed."
"Put the eggs on the plates."
He put the eggs on the plates.
We ate in silence, and halfway through, his foot found mine under the table and stayed there.
Neither of us mentioned it.
On Friday night he took me to the Tin Roof.
It was his bar, a long dark room with a pressed-tin ceiling and a jukebox.
The bartender called him "Sheridan" like a last name in a locker room.
I wore a green top with a neckline that I had bought on a dare from myself.
I drank root beer.
He drank a beer and kept his arm along the back of our booth.
Every few minutes his fingers found the nape of my neck and rubbed it, absently.
"This is not a date," he told the bartender, twice.
"Sure, Sheridan."
"It's a neighbor thing."
"Whatever you say."
I was laughing into my glass when a woman stopped beside our table.
She was tall and gorgeous, with a sleek dark ponytail and a leather jacket.
I would have killed for her body.
She looked at Ashton.
"Ash," she said. "Hey. It's been, what, since March?"
He went rigid.
I felt it in the arm behind my neck.
"Hey," he said. "How are you?"
