Chapter 24: The Queen of the Wildlands
She read the letter that night, alone, by the fire in the round tower room.
The paper was thin as an onion skin and the ink had gone brown.
"My daughter," it began.
"If Hild has kept her promise, you are grown, and you are reading this in the north."
"I am writing in a house with locked doors.
"You are asleep in the next room with your fist in your mouth, and I will not be here when you wake."
"I have taught you the old words in the dark so that they will wait in you like seeds."
"Do not come home the way I was brought, in a cart with a guard. Come the way you choose."
"Come in a stranger's veil, if you must. Come on a borrowed horse. But come with your own face lifted."
"The Wildlands are cold, and the people are stubborn, and they will love you past all sense."
"I was seventeen once, and so afraid."
"Be less afraid than I was. I have never loved anyone as I love you."
The last line was a lullaby, written out in the old tongue, and she knew every word of it.
Marit read it three times.
Then she folded it small and put it inside her bodice, against her heart, and went to find her husband.
