Chapter 11: The Cane
"Repeat that," Rocco said.
Bianca opened her mouth, and nothing came out.
"The Corsini boss gave the order. You carried the message. Who did you carry it to?"
"Roc, please. I'm sick. My arm..."
"Who did you carry it to?"
She looked at the men holding her, at the elders' black car pulling up at the gate, at me.
"To Nico," she said.
"And Nico put the device in my wife's vault."
"He... yes."
"And what did the Corsinis promise you?"
"Your house," she whispered. "They said when you were gone, the house would be mine."
The men around us went still.
Rocco took out a handkerchief and wiped the ash off his fingers, one at a time.
"You wanted my house," he said. "I gave you a room in it for twenty-two years."
"Roc..."
"Take her to the elders. Keep her at the old farmhouse upstate until the Commission sits. Nobody speaks to her, and nobody lets her out of their sight."
"Roc! Please!"
Two men took her away, still screaming his name across the lot.
I watched her go.
It did not feel like the victory I had wanted.
"And this one?" one of the men asked, nodding at Nico.
Nico was on the ground with his head down, and his gold chain had come off in the mud.
"Put him in the cellar," Rocco said. "Alive. He is going to say it again in front of the whole Commission."
"Boss, I'll say anything..."
"I know."
They dragged him out by the arms.
When the lot was empty, Rocco took off his watch and put it in his pocket.
Then he turned and looked at the black shell of the Brooklyn center.
