Chapter 15: The House at Night
Cesare came down the cellar stairs three at a time.
Vito told him in four sentences.
Cesare did not curse, and he did not pause.
"The children," he said.
"Upstairs. The gate guards check in every ten minutes. I'll call them."
"Don't." Cesare was already looking at the small window high in the cellar wall.
Through it, between the bare branches, I saw the iron gates standing open at the end of the drive.
A van sat beyond them with its lights off.
"They're here," I said.
Nobody spoke.
Then Cesare took my face in both hands, hard, for a moment.
"Nursery," he said. "The big closet. Lock it from inside and put them on the floor. Anyone who opens that door and isn't me or Vito, you shoot."
"Yes."
"Elisa."
"I know."
I ran.
The pistol was in my waistband, still warm from the cellar.
I took the back stairs two at a time, and somewhere below me a window broke.
