Chapter 17: Preparations
Cesare told his son in the garden, because he said a boy should hear it in the open air.
It was Wednesday afternoon, cold and bright, and the stone bench was wet with melted frost.
Tommaso sat on it with his hands under his thighs.
Sofia was inside with the housekeeper, drawing horses.
I stood at the edge of the path, where Cesare had asked me to stand, and wished I were anywhere else.
"I'm going to tell you what happened to your mother," Cesare said. "All of it. Then you can ask me anything."
"I know what happened."
"You know what the city said."
Tommaso looked at the ground.
Cesare did not sit.
He crouched in front of the bench so their eyes were level, in his good black coat, in the dead grass.
"Your mother found out that someone was stealing from me. She went to that man to tell him, because she thought he was our friend. He was the one stealing."
